Fernhill Food Forest is part permaculture classroom, part woodland restoration, and part community gathering space—an ongoing effort to care for the land while learning from it.

And along the way, we’re growing tasty fruits, fresh herbs, veggies, and flowers for people and wildlife to enjoy.

What Is a Food Forest?

A food forest is a garden designed to mimic a natural forest, but filled with edible plants like fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, herbs, and vegetables. Planted in layers—from tall trees to ground cover—it makes the most of sunlight, space, and water. The plants work together to enrich the soil, attract pollinators, repel pests, and hold moisture, creating an efficient, resilient, and beautiful way to grow food.

Since starting the food forest, we’ve expanded into broader ecological restoration. Our initial restoration site is the woodland area below the food forest—affectionately called “the Down Below.” We plan to grow these efforts into other parts of the park over time.
